C Hoop/Pillar Repair Possible or Solutions

Well...my last post was asking about rear quarter panel repairs...I have sourced the parts and the truck is scheduled to go in to the body shop on Monday. Anyway...in preparation for its visit to the body shop...I removed the C hoop and this is what is left of the drivers side mount to the tub.

Is there any way to fix this or is it time to shop for a new C Hoop?

I am hoping to salvage my hoop if possible.

Hi, the first 3.5 inches of the cage are vertical and not curved so you can make new stubs to slide inside the tube. The inside diameter is around 1.54 inches so find some steel tube that is a snug fit or turn it down. For the feet, you would that've to cut them off cleanly and the new feet have to be at least thick enough to clear the small tubes protruding from the capping because the inside diameter of the new tube will be too small to go over this. Weld on the stubs and black hammerite. You should probably bolt the stubs into the old c pillar - drill the rubber with a small hole cutter and drill the steel tubes with a normal drill. Given you are only 2 or 3 inches from the foot you can get a spanner in.

Thank you for the info...do you think you can weld the sleeved tube down inside the old C hoop? I would prefer not to drill and bolt it if possible.

Thinking get some feet made..weld the feet to the sleeve...hammer the sleeve down into the C hoop..ensure allignment...weld the sleeve internally to the hoop? Will it weld without destroying the rubber on the outside of the C hoop?

Does anybody have replacement feet or the dimensions?

Thanks guys

What is that tube protruding from the capping? Are all NAS 90's supposed to have that? Mine doesn't.

Am confused by this too. Is that the inside tube of the cage that is just stuck there? I guess that wouldnt explain why its red inside.

My ROW truck has the same protruding tube where the roll cage attaches at the B pillar.

Early 1994s had that. It is a throw back from the Series style capping. The later NAS 90s did not have it and also had some minor cage changes in the rear.

I do not check PMs. Call or email if you need something.

ECR is not a parts source. We are not in the mail order business.

Wonder where the cut off is for this change. Seems so weird to have that tube sticking out when the early trucks didn't even include a rear cage. One more thing for people to get hurt on.

Yup.

I would cut out the tube from the capping and weld a flat plate onto the bottom of the cage if it is good enough shape to do that. Sleeve the inside of the cage if need be. Does your truck have the lower cage mount in the tub?

It would not bother me much to get it decent enough. OTOH I don't have anyone ride in the back of my truck.

Yes I have the lower supports. They are the early 94 style that have the horizontal bars that run the length of the tub.

I was thinking about that, however; I do have my 7 year old son back there fairly often.

I am going to see what I can do for a plate and grind down the tubes low enough to match the depth. I don't see the capping tubes doing too much in the way of supporting the hoop. It appears more of an indexing part to me. Regardless of how I go about it...it will be better than its current state.

It would be nice if there was a replacement set of plates out there. Would make the repair pretty straight forward.

Thanks for clearing that up Mike.
