burping the coolant

i read to do this -remove the plug to the pipe leading to the heater hoses and start the engine. how is this supposed to work?i have tried it twice and coolant just comes pooring out after i start it up

Since this is a vertical pipe, any air bubbles going through the system go up the pipe when coming back from the heater (or going to it, can't remember)--it is also the highest point in the system. You want coolant coming out of it--it does not mean all the air is out, but it is the best place to drain the air.

so is this the only way? i would guess i will loose a few gallons of coolant

Drive it up an incline first (nose of the rig up in the air) then try and bleed the air out.
