Broken Defrost Diverter Cable?

Yes I searched for this one...

My defroster cable suddenly moves freely and the airflow is stuck in defrost mode. Is the cable connected a diverter under the dash or in the engine compartment? I assume I am going to have to pull the dash out?

Check and pray that the issue is that it slipped or loosened up on the control lever side on the LH side of the dash. If it broke or slipped elsewhere then you get to take a good portion of your entire dash apart (its a sucky job).

I do not check PMs. Call or email if you need something.

The diverter cable actuates some flapper valves in the lower half of the dash. If you reach up under the dash through the blow holes (it will feel a bit nasty) you'll be able to touch the flappers themselves - (the left and right sides are connected). The problem is that the diverter cable goes through the tray and actuates these flappers. The cable is anchored in the tray, but it is very weak, and pulls out easily. I think I have a picture, but I'm way too lazy to check now. Suffice to say, you can reach underneath the dash and assist the flappers while you move the lever on the cluster. It will work, but you'll feel a bit like you're molesting your truck, and you'll still have to fix it later.

Thanks Jim! I'll sweet talk my truck when I do it. Maybe have some Barry White playing...
