Broke something not sure what or how bad

I'll start off with how it happened. I was trying to cross a narrow creek bed and sunk down to the doors on the left side and was on dry ground on the right. Everthing was really bound up and had it in low lock(stock not lockers). I had the brake down trying BTM and at around 1500-2000 rpms all the tension and everything gave way and there whas a loud pop and grinding when it was in gear. I got it out of the creek and couldn't find what broke but it will only drive in either high lock or low lock but it pops and grinds. Took out the front drive shaft and that didn't do much. I'm lost at what it might be and am going out to my land to work on it tonight. Any advice as to what the possibilities to what it might be would help a whole lot.

I would check front axels and CV's. More than likely, it should be the short side CV. I have done this sevearal times. Over time and use, the inner cage of the CV gets stress cracks, then when you put an extra load on them, they break.

Ok I was suspecting the CV from reading what usually breaks on the defender. Is there a stronger better part the I could replace it with?

New CV's

There are a few options...

1 GBR's Axels and CV's, great stuff... $1700.00

2 CV unlimted in SC. $899.00 - you can call George Stuckey (4340 Chromo, heat treated and Cryo'd.)

I have CV unlimited in the front and GBR's in the back. Both are excellent.

Ok took it apart last night and this is what it appears I need:

1 Left Front CV Joint assy
1 Left Front Inner Axle Shaft
1 Outer Spindle Grease Seal
1 Outer Axle Tube/Shaft Grease Seal
1 Knuckle/Axle Ball Grease Seal

If I choose to upgrade to the heavy duty stuff will I need to buy it for the right wheel also?

Yep... I would not make sense to upgrade just one side.

Your other option is to find a LR Salvage yard and get the parts off a disco.
