Blue smoke on my Diesel

This week, I started to get blue smoke out of my 2.8 TGV. It occurs intermittently while it's relatively cold, and only at idle (after about 15-20 sec) , or starting to move from a stop (big ploom). it doesn't always do it.

This engine proably is still under 30k, and didn't smoke ever until this week. Some things that have changed on it are:
  1. increased donaldson pre-cleaner on snorkel from 7" to 10" due to realization that 7" was way to small for this engine.
  2. drove at highway speeds last week running at 215F for 2 x 2hr stretches. Turns out that 2 months ago, when I completed my Webasto install, I did a horrible job at bleeding the coolant, and was 2 gals short (of a 5 gal sys). Now it is running at 200F on highway, and under 180 around town.
  3. Axles, tranny, T-case and fuel tank all plumbed into extended breather manifold.
I know that blue smoke tends to indicate oil in the combustion, but I'm uncertain how to begin the inspection/process of elimination on this.

I'm going to completely top off tonight and begin monitoring coolant and oil consumption, but does anyone have any further insight?

No.... That is for petrol engines. Engine oil will burn as cleanly as diesel.

Check the timing and air filter first. Cold start smoke is usually one or two cylinders not burning. The smoke is partially burnt fuel. This can be due to low compression, retarded timing, bad spray pattern....

You could also have a turbo seal gone leaking into the turbine, but I doubt it.

Unhook the snorkel tubing just to be sure the precleaner is not choking the motor. easy check...

When is the last time you changed you fuel filter? Bad fuel? is is stumbling at all?

Other than that, I'd check the timing.

fuel filters just changed, both are racor separator filters.

Does anyone know if the 2.8 TGV uses the same timing tools as a 300 TDI?
