Bike carriers

Not so technical, but seems to be the right place to post....Anyone have experience with bike carriers? I need to buy a bike carrier for my yet-to-be-delivered D-90. I'd love to hear any feedaback with spare tire mounted carriers vs. hitch racks. Also, specific brand recommendations would be helpful. I know Thule makes both, but I'd like to get the best and most stable carrier.

search the most recent posts on "bike"...many on this. Remember if you get a reciver type carrier you are going to need a "reciever extension" because of your spare tire. There are lots of good options listed here, it of course always comes down to your personal taste.

** When does the 90 arrive?

Thanks for reminding me to search before I post. I am new to this but will get it right soon. I realize that most of my questions have already been answered so I will search first. I would like to use a spare tire mounted bike rack. From what I've read in the old posts, it seems I need to purchase an adapter plate from Jeff Payne and then I'm good to go with the Yakima Sparetime. Thanks.

Hey Bill Larson, thanks for your pm and your continued help. I'm sure most of you already know this, but what a great guy. I really appreciate the huge favor - Bill Larson drove quite a bit out of his way to look at a vehicle that I purchased on this forum, with great peace of mind thank to Bill Larson's eyes and knowledge. I need to share the love. I hope I can pay it forward once I learn a little more about these vehicles. Thanks again!

I bought a thule 964 swing out bike rack, mainly so that I could use it on the suv also. Think dual purpose...always, thats my motto...but you will need the extension and the rack isn't cheap thats for sure!

Bill may have had a driver, but he did go along way to "look" at the truck. Well, I know the guide dog liked it.

Other than being able to use it on both vehicles, what's your preference and why - spare tire rack or hitch rack? And, can you fully open the rear door when the 964 is swung out of the way? How long an extension?

I like to keep the spare tire, sorry tyre clear and this rack does it. last thing I want is to pull the bikes off to change a flat, plus I carry five bikes so thats already a pain. A 24" extension is the standard I belive. Internet search will do ya...
