Roll cage is not a must have. 99.9% of defender/series/etc. never got a roll cage. They don't just flatten when they go upside down.

best / most useful defender upgrade

Check out this little wizbangatry. By far, this is my favorite of the upgrades I made to my defender during its restoration process. I highly recommend it to others. Not only is it a great conversation starter (as if driving a defender alone isn't a conversation starter) but it is very useful.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.
