Now that my LS swap is up and running I need strong axles!
I ordered a trutrac heavy duty 24 spline rear diff and axles from GBR back in September. I received the diff a week later and the axles were due in a couple of weeks. I swapped out the diff and sent the original 10 spline back. Now 7 weeks later, I’m dead in the water without axles and not clear on when they will arrive.
I want to be clear this is NOT a complaint about GBR. He is a great guy and is challenged by his Australian source.
If this was 10 spline before, I "assume" it is a drum braked axle and the D1 axles will not be the correct length. If it was a late model axle, it would have already been 24 spline and he would have the axles....
The in laws have a ranch in the hill country, so it will see some limited off-road work. The LS is from a 2012 Camaro and the diff needed an upgrade. That means 24 splines which is what I now have with stock thick drive flanges and rear drums.
This is my daily driver, so every day I can’t drive it means I’m at the mercy of the wife. Not a good situation!
Yes, so you need to get the earlier shafts. Not sure that Lucky8 sells them. You can buy direct from Ashcroft at the same cost and you will have them in a few days.
Well, the accelerator pedal and my foot have always had a contentious relationship. I can’t leave the two without adult supervision or they’re all pressed up against the firewall.
I have calls into Lucky8 and Ashcroft. We’ll see who responds. I actually need a set for my 1987 90 with a 3” lift and 37’s that spends 95% of its time off road, but I need to save up or sell a few things first.
Switching from 10 to 24 reguires you also (in my experience) swap the stub axles and hubs from 10 spine stuff to 24.
Recently ordered from Lucky 8 and Erik steered us away from the Ashcroft to the TF stuff for the Cummins build.
Time will tell
Not needed. You just need the longer aftermarket halfshafts or the genuine 24 spline, early halfshafts. The older wider hubs and drive flanges are a better design. The late model axles were a downgrade all so people could fit alloy rims.
The problem with using stock late model Rover axle 24 spline shafts is that they are the same strength as the stock 10 spline shafts. You are not gaining anything by changing to the late model stock 24 spline stuff.
Salisbury 24 spline shafts and the early model Rover axle 24 spline shafts were much stronger.
I should add, since it is probably not commonly known that you can get genuine 24 spline shafts for the early wider axles. FRC8094/5. The V8 90s and military 90s used 4 pinion 24 spline diffs with 24 spline shafts. These are a lot stronger than the late model 24 spline stuff.
SP4x4 has shipped a few things to me using DHL. They are faster than Fedex and UPS on international stuff.
