Best engine bang for the buck?? Need some advice.

So I'm knee deep in rebuilding my RHD 86 110 and am trying to figure out what to do power plant wise. Currently she has a 2.5na diesel and manual steering. Engine runs good, has about 90,000 miles on it. I will be adding slightly bigger tires and power steering for sure. I want to stay diesel but would like a bit more power. I have been considering the 200tdi, 300tdi or the Merc OM617 TD.

What would be the easiest and cheapest option? Do they make a turbo for the 2.5na that would add some power?

I can get a old Merc for about $500 but the conversion parts are about $3500.

200Tdi maybe 4k? And a fairly easy swap.

Any advice would be great! Thanks guys

Re: om617...

It's a great bang for the buck in so far as you aren't out $4500 if it shits the bed... You are just out the low cost of another om617. This is why I went with the om617 over a rover tdi.

That being said, don't kid yourself by thinking it will cost anywhere close to just the price of conversion parts and an engine. By the time you update plumbing, fan, some wiring, gauges and all the small parts that go along with it you need to budget at least $1k above what you have guessed is a liberal estimate.

The Same goes for any big rover project

To bring the set up to a stock 300 engine bay plus motor and r380 I am guessing 7k total.

I could deal with 4k....7k and I will be living in the Rover after my wife kicks me out!

Anyway to get more power out of the 2.5na? Can a turbo be added?

No turbo but I put a K&N filter on mine and it did make a little difference. Also I think someone on here is running a LP injection set up in one which might help. Do this while you save up the money for a swap down the road.

I'd concur. I love diesel and turbos but if my current engine needs replacement I'd go that route for sure and say bye bye to diesel in a heart beat.

Interesting option, would need a lot of parts to change out for sure though plus all the electrics and wiring...

I do like the simplicity of the old diesels. Much less to go wrong!

Is this your engine for sale?

My truck, an 86 110, had the anemic but lovable 2.5 in it before my swap. I drove it a ton - daily for the better part of two years. At the end of the day, only steep downhill grades and hurricane force tailwinds will give that truck notable speed. I think they were about 68 hp when they left the factory. Even if you COULD add 10 horsepower... What would it really do for the truck?

I will most likely go the LS route in the Range Rover when it's heart stops.

But the Disco stays diesel.

I see, thank you. So that is a good price for that LS? Assuming I can verify the mileage...

I would need to purchase the GM control package also? harness, computer, etc??

thats about half the price you will find on eBay for that kind of mileage and it seems to included the harness and ecm (computer)

Plenty of info here.
