I was taking a look at the Odessey chart that was posted for approved charger. The funny part is that on the chart they do not recommend any Schumacher units. However, the Odessey chargers are made by Schumacher! Odessey went to Battery Tender to make their chargers yrs ago but was turned down so they went to the other big player.

To correctly charge an AGM battery you need to bring the charge voltage up between 14.4 and 14.7V and hold jt there for a given period of time. Ideally you should combine this with 1.25Amp output and above for the Odessey batteries - other AGMs do not require the charge output to be as high as 1.25amp as they don't have as much internal resistance.

Does the Odyssey group 31 fit without any bracket changes needed in the battery box?

I've put group 31s in several defenders and I like to redo the battery hold down at the same time. After all the diehard platinum weighs 84lbs and ends up much closer to the seat box lid than the original battery so you really don't want it moving around.

I see -- looks like odyssey has a group 24, so maybe I'll just stick with that to make it plug and play...

Why in the world would you fork out the money for an Odyssey and not get the biggest one that will fit?

Really?

I think my two yellow-top Optimas with a painless battery controller may not be the "best" but are miles ahead of a single "wet" battery....

Anyone considered these?
http://www.lithionicsbattery.com/

They are local to me and can make whatever battery we need.
They offered to have me come by to discuss my needs as I mentioned winching, high amp draw from lights, engine etc.
They "claim" they have a battery that can handle it all with ease, and weighs like 10lbs or so.
They also have a backup built in so if the battery is dead, you push a switch and theres enough to start the car

Maybe a group buy?

I just put a group 34 Diehard Platinum in my Defender, Ive never heard the starter spin faster. I like the little handle that is built into the case. It has two smaller posts which are ideal for a fusebox etc. I am extremely happy. I considered the group 31 but it was so heavy and my back is hurt.

He did tell me something I wasn't aware of, that the Diehard Gold is made by East Penn.

This is correct! I am sorry I guess I should check in more often. If anyone has any charger questions I would be happy to forward them along to the correct personal.

I also just put a platinum group 34 in my truck. Does anyone have a preferred/recommendation charger from the Odyssey approved list?

Hm. Just bought a Deka Intimidator G24 AGM for $165 at Pasco. G24 is a little bigger than a G34 by an inch and a half or so. Can barely lift the darn thing.

My batteries plus was able to get Deka or Odyssey...think the Deka was around 230 and the Odyssey was 270. Ended up ordering online since it was cheaper and no tax.

Someone on another forum got a Deka AGM (I don't know which one) at one of the big box stores for a really good price. I think it was Sams or Costco.

Pasco takes care of me. I will always buy batteries and cables from them. They refurbished the chipper starter motor for super cheap.
