Thinking of buying one since they are only $40. Is it worth it? Can you fit a cooler back there with the spare tire?

Nope. Tire takes up too much space. You need an extension bar.

I see Uhaul makes different size extensions:

lav, i use a 14 with mine and it does fine. it even gives me enough room to still open the back door and slide an 11 year old and/or Weimaraner through on long trips.
