Backfire

I've searched and read 12+ posts on Backfire but they didn't address the issue I'm experiencing.

3.5L v8 with SU carbs and getting a backfire only when I turn off the engine. If the outside temp is above 80 seems like i dont have the issue but when its cool in the mornings or evenings it seems to happen more often. I've taken it for long two hour drives and short quick runs and same thing happens. Other than that it runs strong and no sputtering for problems. Just when I turn off the key. Pop!

As in proper gapping? I did replace the plugs a little while back but they were pre-gapped. Or at least I thought they were.

Is the timing set? Try advancing it a degree or two.

Engine run on? No.
No as in pull the plugs and have a look. The plugs can tell you a lot. Ive seen this happen before with one plug that had heavy deposits built up on it and it stayed hot enough to ignite unburnt fuel after shutoff- POP. If you happen to be running a little rich anyhow it's even easier for this to happen

I always check plug gap even on new plugs, I've seen 8 "pre gapped" plugs come out of the boxes with 8 different gaps...

Are you backfiring out the exhaust or the intake?
