Are you planning on upgrading to lockers anytime soon? If not, put your old third member into the Discovery axle thats in your truck now (if it is 24 spline). Trust me you want the 4 pin diff if you're planning on staying open.

Jafir - that's strange, every ex-MOD 90 I have come across has been 24 spline rear. I wonder if I've just been lucky?

And to explain the shaft problem... Stock late model 24 spline shafts (Disco, D90, RRC) are wasted to close to the same diameter as the older 10 spline shafts. Testing has shown them to fail at around the same torque. so putting in stock 24 spline shafts give little to no strength increase. You need to change to aftermarket shafts to get a benefit.

The "HD" axles used in early V8 90 rears and some MOD trucks have 24 spline shafts that are much stronger. They only have slight wasting and are probably made with better materials. My math gives a 30% strength increase from the difference in diameter alone. The 24 spline shafts used in the Salisbury rears are similar.

You "should" be able to tell if it is "HD" from the axle serial number. IIRC, the HD axle is "23S". It is explained in the parts catalog.

Also the end of the halfshaft is usually stamped "HD".

And to further explain (or confuse), you can not use the factory HD 24 spline axles in the later 24 spline housing because the hubs are different.

What about putting a TD5 into a 10 splined half shaft 90?
If there is no difference in strength 10 vs 24 half shafts would I need to change?
Or would there be a problem with the 10 spline diff?

I changed from 10 to 24 spline because I wanted lockers and the ability to buy cheap replacement shafts and HD aftermarket shafts.

There are advantages to moving from factory 10 spline to factory 24 spline, but what John is saying is that "strength" is not one of them.

That said, switching to 24 spline gives you access to quite a few aftermarket HD shaft options. 10 splines do not.
