Axel end mods

How does one modify the axel ends of an 1985 L/R 90 to fit allows on the truck? The "mushroom caps" as someone called them stick out to far to get the center cap on. Other than spacers, what are my options?
Thanks,
Tom

They are 1 1/4 inch aluminum, I do not remember the brand. I will see what I can dig up.

Cant you just change out the drive flanges or whatever? I havent done it, but I'm curious as to what the difference is.

I think if you change the flanges you will have to change the axles. But you may be running 10 spline and you may have to change more...

a picture speaks a thousand words.

just the dust caps

I was wondering if I could switch out the dust caps to shorter ones? I have the taller ones ath the moment, on an 1985 LR 90.

1985 had 10 spline rear axles. Different flanges.. You would have to change to 24 spline diffs and later shafts. Or get the spacers..

Take off the rubber caps and weld on new caps. Takes away the really pointless rubber caps and might allow you to run the rims.

You may be able to use the 10-spline axles from a 87-88 Range Rover Classsic in the rear - not sure about the fronts.

Pull one of the axles and find out what you have first. Don't know if your truck is a ROW or a MOD. If its a mod there is a very good chance that it has 24 spline HD axles already.

I'm just guessing but I imagine they sell center caps for the alloys that bulge out like the rubber caps. Spacers are way expensive.

But more importantly why alloys?

Yeah the spacers are way too expensive. Why can't someone make a more affordable one?

Hi Tom you have a few choices...

1) axle should be a 10 Spline outer so you can fit axles from an early discovery or RRC
they have the drive shaft welded to the drive member - no leaky or lost caps.!

2) buy slim HD drive flanges that have screw on caps.

3) if you want to fit alloys buy ones for the axle, compomotive make a set for the early 90 axle
the other issue apart form the center cap is the length of the wheel stud, on cars with alloys there is a bar ( - ) in the end of the stud to show it is suitable for alloys eg the stud is longer.

4) fit spacers but buy good ones, personally I don't like them but if needs must get good quality ones with a makers name on them

On my '85 90 i fitted disco shafts on the rear as it eliminates the clunk from worn drive members
and i had a pair in the garage..

you can do the same thing on the front.

Regards

Gren

Follow-up Post:

HI Again tom sorry missed the picture. the shorter caps are for the later axles but will fit with a little help from a mallet ;-) however they tend to split or pop off when old

Why don't you just get a complete rear axle from a discovery 1 or mid-1993 and up RRC?

Should sell for $150 or so and you would get discs and everything, heck someone gave me all the axles and stuff from an 1987 RRC.
