Ashtray installation help

So when I got my 90, there was a big rectangular hole in the dash. I think the place I got it from was using my car to steal "expensive" parts from to put in other cars... but since I was new to Defenders, I didn't know what I was looking for exactly....

So anyway back to this big gaping hole in my dash. After a bit of search I discovered it was for an ashtray. Turns out these things must be made from gold or something. I finally found a place the sold me a retainer and ashtray, parts MUC1582 & DZA5097L, for a reasonable price and they just showed up today.

The retainer doesn't fit snug in the hole. Am I supposed to bend the tabs out after placing it in the opening in the upper dash pad?

Here is the part I'm talking about:

Yup. Have to push the tabs out under the dash pad.

If you do not want the ash tray there is a storage/ coin holder that can be put in the same location.

Nice!

I wish I has seen that earlier. It says you don't need the solid gold retainer with it.

EDIT: If I buy one of those, maybe I can sell the parts I just bought to a rivet counter doing a restore!?

EDIT again: looks like part number is FDT500040PMA

Or you can always to with the super cool 4 guage dash pod - you have to say that in your best Cartman voice.

I believe Justin @ Lucky8 ordered a number of the ashtray pods a while back so you may want to check with him if you want one

I got a good deal. It was mod surplus parts. 5 pounds instead of $90 for the retainer. Something like that.

ash tray, coin trays were a 2007 and up thing don't have any of those. Hit a bump and any coins up there go all over your interior with one of those.

Sorry. I misread it. I think you're right.

I got my ashtray here: http://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=13361

But I bought a few other things at the same time to save on shipping.
