Ashcroft v KAM v GBR 4.7 gears? (real world experience)

So there's a lot of info out there about the various gears available in the ~4.7 ratio from Ashcroft, KAM, and GBR.

I'd like to cut through the propaganda from the various manufacturers and find out if anyone has any real life polarizing opinions about any of the gears?

Ashcroft 4.71, about $350 from Lucky8

KAM 4.71, about $330

GBR 4.71, about $450

All three companies have great reputations and I don't know off hand of anyone breaking any of the gear sets.

Please share your knowledge!

I doubt there is any way for a real un-biased opinion to be offered. where are you going to find anyone that has used the current versions of different manufacturers and broken one or the other to get a fair comparison? the design changes through the years and the best you would see is someone talking about something that is not representative of what they currently offer.

You are best sticking money into pinning the diff properly as the flexing of the crown wheel away from the pinion appears to be the main cause of failure in a Rover diff.

I would not personally buy KAM as they were bought out a while back and people that used to work there have stated it all went to crap after the change in owners.

Hopefully on Defender Source?

Interesting info about KAM being bought out. I had not heard that.

Other than always running Ashcroft gears in my trucks, I haven't had any issues.

Most often the gears are pretty much the same, it's who installs them and how well that determines noise and lifespan.

Makes sense if KAM was bought by Allmakes - their Terrafirma catalogue has a bunch of KAM stuff in it, and a few other common brands.

Although it's disheartening to hear as I just installed KAM HD shafts and CVs.

Did some digging and couldn't find many real first hand complaints about the new KAM stuff. A few here and there but no more than any other brand it seems. anyone else have first hand experience?

After 13 years of wheeling, I finally blew both my GBR 4.11 R&Ps. (Unpegged, RD56 ARB's)

I am going to buy back and finish my old Hybrid 100"... GBR 4.75's and pegged. New Reverse cut in front and an older 4.75 in the back.

Not 4.7's but I have had GBR 4:11's in my 90SW for about 11 years and about 110k miles. I have wheeled a good deal of everything using 33's, heavy wolfs and stock shafts. I have a Detroit in the rear and a TT in the front. My point is I think GBR knows what they're doing.

I wouldn't rule out KAM altogether just because of what employees said as a result of a buyout. Employees say that all the time when major changes happen like a transaction.

Why am I going to say this???

You could try calling a retailer and asking for honest feedback.

Call one that sells both and ask them what they hear back from *the field*.

Don't know who's doing the install but I did GBR gears and had the housing thrust bolted. GBR built both diffs and they work great. Also, It's pretty hard to beat Bill's customer service too. Should anything break, he stands behind his work. GBR would be my vote.
