Are front and rear O2 sensors really needed?

I'm about to invest in another 3 oxygen sensors for my '97 d90. I'd really like to know if I can run with just two (one on each side), or do I really need one before the cat and after the cat on each side? Is it possible to splice the front and rear together and go to just one good O2 sensor?

I replaced the rear-drivers side last weekend and thought maybe I got lucky, but the CEL just came on again. Zero return on my $100+ investment :-(

Thanks,
Tyler

Replacing them again? They should last longer than a week, so there is something else lighting up your CEL, and no, you can't splice them together.

Tyler, my cats recently went bad and I opted to replace the Y-pipe and sensors as i was cautioned the O2's probably caused the cats to go bad. I have no idea whether all four were bad or not. Nor do I know of a way to test them. If i can get them I'll let you know in case you want them. I hope to pick my truck up this evening.

I only replaced one of them, according to the ODB scanner that was the correct one to replace. I'll scan again to see what's changed (if anything).

I only have 38K on the truck. But I guess if they are the original O2 sensors maybe they went bad over time?

My O2 sensor went bad and I was told that it was due to the ethonol level in my fuel. I don't know if that was true or not.... but after I replaced them and switch to a different brand of gas no more problem... yet. Thet also say fuel additives can ruin O2 sensors.

I have a set of 4 lightly used from a 97, that I bought for spares. I am not sure what they are worth, but I would sell them for a reasonable price.
