Isnt there usually two parts to a part being introduced? Such as year and market?

Should be 89 model years. Definitely only went to smooth room in 89 due to demands for higher top speed.

I'd agree on '89.

I have no idea about it being a response to requests for more speed, but -- I'd bet the roof ribs actually enhance the aerodynamics, such as they are. That big flat roof is a prime spot for friction, and the associated disruption of laminar flow. The ribs would help keep the air flowing straight across the panel, reducing the effect of friction.

For 110's, the roof with "internal stiffeners" (as LR call them), started at VIN # FA345886,

for 90's, it (microcat) doesn't state "internal stiffeners", but there's some body changes at the same VIN number (FA345886)

With the FA prefix, this loosely matches the UK registrations of the late 80's and 90's (my old 200Tdi 90, which was 1992, was on a "J" plate, and had JA prefix) so if you work back from that datum, you get 1989 ish.

So there you go, 1989 ish for change from external ribs to internal ribs. Funnyy now that late Td5's and puma's have got the external ribs again, although only stamped out, not spot welded on like the early models.

Definately the 1989 Model Year, which was available (in the UK) from around September 1988

My mate had a 1989 Model Year 90 (2.5 4-Cyl Petrol) with a smooth roof (UK 'F' Registration) and my 1989 Model Year 110 (UK 'G' Registration) also has a smooth roof, it's VIN is FA404xxx

I've had my 110 from new, I ordered it in August 1989 and collected it from the Dealer's at the beginning of October 1989

The very latest Defenders appear to have reverted to an external ribbed roof, with smaller, lower profile ribs than the pre-1989 type.

In 1989 there were several 'Factory' Engine options available -

2.5 4-Cyl Diesel-Turbo Engine (often called '2.5TD')

2.5 4-Cyl Petrol Engine

3.5 V8 Petrol Engine (with Carburettors)

2.5 4-Cyl Naturally-Aspirated Diesel (Special Order only)

The 200Tdi wasn't fitted until the 1991 Model Year (available from late 1990)
