Anyone have a cheap alternative to Thule roof rack bar pads?

I'm looking for some pads to go over the front and rear rails on a standard SD roof rack to protect the finish when I carry my canoe up there. Thule has some but they're around $25 a pair and I need four. I know it's only $50 but I'm thinking one of you guys has probably found something better/cheaper or come up with an ingenious alternative. Any ideas?

Plumbing insultation and duck tape works for me. I also had some clip on pads that went on the canoe gunwhale instead of the railing. I got those from REI a loooooong time ago though, so I am not sure if they are still available.

My local kayak shop has some double length pads that I use for my kayaks... You may stop by a local shop and see what they have. Or, use the pipe insulation and some black duct tape.

Pool tubes, those noodle things work too, tend to be an awful color but duct tape would fix that. I've found that pool tubes tend to be thicker and hold up better than the pipe insulation.
