Any interest in Aluminum Roof Racks?

I see mostly steel tubular racks on this forum and I was wondering if anyone has experience with these Aluminum roof racks or something similar? I prefer the low profile aluminum style, seems like it would be much lighter while still plenty strong. That said I haven't seen them in person. The one pictured is by a company in South Africa called Big Country. Does anyone have experience with this style?

I have used this style in the past - Hannibal. All aluminum. Very nice, light, and strong. I no longer have the rack as I no longer had a use for it.

Are they available here in the US?

Slee Offroad I believe is a us distributor. They specialize in Toyota Land Cruisers, but I bet they can order racks and accessories for Land Rovers.

I too like the "low profile" and light weight of this design. Was thinking of getting something like this and fabbing mounting points for my soft top, but I bought a 3/4 length Rovers North stainless steel Rack from a forum member here.

The only caveat with either type imho is that a tubular is easier to lash things to if using straps, but a flat one is easier to bolt things in place on. I have a Hannibal on my D2 and will likely go with something tubular on the 110.

I was told by Hannibal that there are setting up new US distribution and they'll have new racks available for sale in the US shortly.

I found a good deal on a Hannibal Roof rack. I can't however determine what model it is and if it will fit my NAS D90 hardtop. The rack dimensions in question is 78" x 57". Can anyone tell me if this will fit my D90? I assume I will have to get the NAS style attachments and make slight modifications which would be worthwhile if it is a good deal.

Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but I'd call Matthew Cox. I've spoken to him a few times in the past...he or Jacques Willig from Hannibal Safari Equipment (info@hannibal.co.za) is very knowledgeable on the Rover front. The US distributor is getting its first Hannibal shipment early January according to Matthew last time we spoke.

I suppose I could contact them. I'm sure they know but they're also going to want to sell me a new rack.

I was just wondering if anyone on the board knew off hand if only the d90 Hannibal rack fits a d90 or if any of the other racks they make could fit was well (with reasonable modifications).
