another starting issue

Please bare with me, I'm new at this

My 110 wont start ('88 110 LHD 2.5TD). It was running fine on Friday, I drove it to work, 30 minute commute x 2, a few other short runs. (I use the Webasto to warm it up). Then I parked it in the garage.

Saturday morning, loaded the truck with gear and family for a fun day at the park...

Webasto warmed up the engine, and when I turned the key, one puff of smoke and 1 second of running followed by a stall.
Then the engine just cranks. Doesn't catch at all. No smoke.
No warning lights.

I thought I found the problem with a frayed wire to the fuel solenoid, but there's 12 volts at the solenoid, so that apparently isn't the problem. I did have a new webasto fuel pump installed last week, so I thought maybe there was air in the system, so I bled the filter and the injection pump.

Nothing has changed.

I'm thinking this is a fuel delivery issue?
I have a full tank (filled Friday afternoon)

Could a fuel pump just up and die all of a sudden?

My thoughts are: I have to check the fuel pressure. Fuel backflow? Air leak somewhere?
I don't think glow plugs are an issue since the outside temperature is now warm? Or could that still be an issue?

I would appreciate any other thoughts?

Thank you!

Ed

Update-

I cracked the fuel filter bleed and cranked, and there was fuel.
I cracked the pump bleed bolt and cranked, and there was fuel.
I cracked one of the injectors and... No fuel.

I changed the stop solenoid and the engine started!
But... Then it didn't stop.

So, my starting problem was definitely the solenoid,
But I'm assuming I didn't install the new one correctly?

Is there a trick to getting the plunger/spring lined up while installing?

Thanks,

Ed

The solenoid is essentially an electromagnet when energized by 12V retracts the fuel stop plunger to let fuel pass by to run the engine.
If you installed it incorrectly and the plunger is not seating or missing the little return spring, the engine will NOT shut off with the key.

Hey, it's nice to see you jumping in with both feet.
Keep up the DIY... everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Thanks for the quick reply!

The spring was definitely there when I approached the injector pump
But then at some point, you have to let go of the plunger, and race gravity to seat the plunger/solenoid.

I guess I will take it off and try seating it again.

You should have seen my victory lap when she started up. And then the look of panic when it wouldn't shut off... Luckily I had read other threads on stalling a runaway engine. This forum is the best
