Another Battery Question....

I have read all the Battery threads and must admit I'm still confused:

Optima - Some love them, some hate them. All agree quality went down when JCI purchased and moved south of the border.

Odyssey - 31M 2150 looks awesome but sooo expensive???

DieHard Platinum Marine - Everyone's darling but discontinued

Excide - mixed reviews

Others - ???

If I wanted to spend $200-$250...any suggestions on best Battery to buy? I think I've narrowed it down to the DieHard AGM Gold or the Optima 3478...

Thanks for the input....

What's confusing? Buy Odyssey or Deka, that's it. Then choose whether you want flooded or AGM. There you go. One out of 4 choices.

Also ask yourself if you really need an Odyssey 2150. Smaller Odyssey batteries would probably work great for you, even with light winching.

Run fast away. Went through three in a weekend on a road trip no less.

Thought it was the charging system and took it to the dealer. They said faulty battery. Optima admitted to me they were having quality control issues.

Optima is horrible, blahblahblah.

I have two yellow tops. First one lasted 5+ years and died as I tend to leave my lights on and drained it a lot over 5 years. Secondary battery is now 6 years old and still strong.

Great warranty and lots of options.

When Optima became a primary sponsor of ChumpCar 2013, they handed out free red tops to all the teams. Very cool gesture. Of course we had to add their logos to our cars and gear.

I love this battery. Wish I had a second one for dual battery setup and one for my disco.

Autozone Duralast Platinum is an AGM battery manufactured for them by East Penn (Deka). I have two of them now in different vehicles and if you want an AGM battery I think they are a good value.

Bill nailed it. I will admit that I am a battery and tire snob. Saving $100 will ruin a good day sometime over the next 60mo you own most other brands... Odyssey or Deka will last as long as they say they will; not the 70% the others last and then not worth the hassle to deal with warranty.

Jason at Performance Rovers in NC had a deep cycle battery he swore by when we chatted at Uhwarrie.

You may want to talk to him before making a purchase.

I've always used NAPA Gold Legend batteries. Never had an issue. I think they are made by Deka.

I wouldn't put a free Optima battery in my truck unless they included a jump box.

Here is my opinion....

If you are not off roading, any battery will be fine, seriously, any battery. If you are off roading, then an AGM is not a bad idea to prevent damage.

The important thing with lead acid batteries is to keep them properly charged. They have a limited cycle life and do not fair well being heavily discharged. Purchase a quality charger and mount it on the truck. Plug it in whenever you can. The battery will last for a very long time if it is kept "properly" charged. I think I'm 12 years so far on the batteries in my truck and still going strong. I'm convinced nearly 100% of battery failures can be attributed to inadequate charge maintenance. A charger is cheaper than a battery.

I would agree with this if it excluded Optima. They are the only batteries that I have replaced that are almost brand new. Both on my personal vehicles (replaced 5 times under warranty) and in customer vehicles.

If you want to go the Deka route, then you may want to consider this one (assuming you have access to Sam's Club):

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...Id=prod3590232

Deka and the Energizer AGMs are both manufactured by East Penn and share the same specs. I've had mine for a little over a month and it's been great so far, though the real test will be the first sub 20 degree start next winter. I also like that I have a Sam's a few minutes away should any warranty needs arise.
