American living in the UK and want to bring home a Defender

We are currently in the UK on an expat assignment and will be here for a while. It has always been my dream to own a Defender especially the 110, and as fate would have it we are now in Land Rover country living very close to Solihull. Not only do I want to get one now, but actually get one that I can bring back home when we return home to the US. From what I have researched, I need to get one that is at least 25 years old. I am 100% positive there are members here that are proud fellow Americans and fellow forum members that have imported a Defender from the UK and are clear about the process. Can someone please point me in the right direction or share the specifics? How much duty would I be looking at paying in the US? I have just started my search and would be looking for a Tdi, almost all the transmissions here are manual, but they can be converted to automatic and this is something I will have done for sure.

Here are some of the models I am looking at:

1989 Land Rover Defender County 110 200 tdi Auto, 1986 Land Rover Defender 110 5 Door Station Wagon with 200 Tdi Engine and Defender 110 Station Wagon 200 TDI, 1984.

Also, read a lot on the East Coast Rover site, but not clear if air-conditioning can be added to these older years. Can someone please clarify?

Please also share if there is a specific detail/model within the 110 I should be looking for.

Appreciate any input that will help me achieve this dream.

Sorry to inform you that none of the vehicles you mention can be safely imported into the US.

Trucks need to be 25 year old and in original configuration, no engine transplants, chassis changes or axles conversions are allowed. Tdi's and auto gearbox conversions are also not allowed. There are a couple of hundred pages on this forum about importation / registration in the US. Since Jan last year it has become increasingly difficult to import any Defender unless it is in original mechanical specs.

Good luck in your search.

Hi. Welcome to the UK. From what I have read and understood your 110 needs to be original or restored to original condition.
The letter I read was from someone in US Customs. He said the vehicle can't be modified. So no LHD conversions, no auto box, no later/different fuel engines.
He went on to say that restoration means that the vehicle is returned to the condition and spec that it left the factory with.
You may be better off buying a good solid basic vehicle sending it home followed a couple of weeks later by a container full of parts. From what I gather once the vehicle is through customs you can modify it pretty much any way you want. The only thing could be engine compliance...
I hope this helps... John

Oh boy. Time for the biweekly new thread on I want to import a Defender.
PM Uncle Doug here who will handle all the customs etc details for you.
Basically any 25 year old plus vehicle that is built as it left the factory with original chassis and original spec drivetrain can be imported. So forget automatics, forget the tdi engine unless it left the factory that way, forget galvanized chassis, alloy wheels etc etcetera

Rocky - By Doug, if you mean Doug @ http://www.dividingcreekimports.com. I have just sent him a note and will take his steer on how to make this happen.

Rivermike - Many thanks for your response. Your response has pretty much clarified all my questions. I will take a peek at your inventory, but looks like I am simply in the market for an all original 110 that I will have to get sorted once back home in the US. I will send you a PM as well as I have seen some of your other posts and you have done some heavy restorations and upgrades. My plan would be to buy all the upgrade parts etc from here and just have it get packed up in our shipping container.

Landrovermanuk - Appreciate your input, glad to have found this forum and what a beautiful sunny day it is here today in Hanbury.

Good luck with finding your 110. It's a lovely sunny day down here in Essex as well. It's just a shame we haven't had any snow this winter...
There is probably not a lot I can do to help but if you do need a hand pm me, and I'll do what I can...
All the best John.

I finally found an all original Defender 90. It is a 1985 soft top in with the original engine and chassis. The engine number and chassis/Vin are all original and on the V5 certificate as well. I will be taking delivery tomorrow. It will go into a restoration specialist right away for a detailed check up.

Pictures to follow shortly .

nice and tidy.

Once you get it "home" you can play then? stick on a disc rear axle, vented front, decent engine/box etc.
