Especially it the frame were made with via casting I would imagine there has got to be a way to develop something for under $750,000. Obviously windows and gaskets (and install time for them) would need to be included... but assuming the conservative estimates above someone should be able to recoup all of their costs and probably even take a little off the top. Perhaps I'm too naive
Good heck, you'd be lucky to sell 20, ever. Ask ECR about the business case for getting 25 new NAS racks made, and they didn't even have to design the unit. Group buy organizers find It can be hard to move more than just a few of anything, even low-dollar stuff, and it's really aggravating sitting on inventory when you're not actually in business.

I wonder if this will work?

A removable aluminum hardtop for ST D90s would basically have 4 parts: the roof, 2 sides and a hatch. The roof would be the the most complex part to fabricate.

What if someone made a wooden auto body buck like those used by traditional coach builders to duplicate the roof? Then, this wooden buck could be taken to a specialist in car restoration that deals with aluminum bodywork to hand hammer a roof. According to Hemmings Auto News, such restoration specialists charge around $65/hour or more. So, $65 hour x ??? hours of work.

Maybe a couple forum members can get together by region and build the wooden buck together, or someone could build one and then rent it out to others, etc.

Just an idea.
