Alternator Wiring Question

Ok, dumb question time, but trying to figure out why my alternator is giving 18v now, and replacing the regulator didn't help.

Wiring. Big brown wire is the output.
small brown/yellow goes to the charging light circuit.
white/grey for the alternator output.

Diagram calls for a ground cable, but mine only has the above 3 wires on it. Is there also supposed to be a separate ground on it?

We are talking about your 94 nas? Stock alt?
Your wiring sounds right. Does the charge light come on in the dash when you turn the key on? ie the bulb is good?
Ground may be referring to the resistor on the back?

Bulb is very very dim, when it's on at all. Swapped in a known good bulb too, same result.

Brown/Yellow is also the voltage sense circuit, correct? What voltage should I be seeing there? Only seeing around 9v on that wire, the other two (Output and tach output) are giving me battery voltage.

Probably running the ground circuit through the case, and into the engine block I guess.

Maybe our colors are different, but for me the yellow wire from the Defender goes to D+ for ignition, and the Defender grey/Purple with white stripe wire goes to W for tach.

Yeah, I think they must have change the colors in '95 I've got brown (the main output), brown/yellow (sense/lamp) and white/grey (tach).

Interesting, yours does have a ground wire on the case. Tried adding one, no success.

Heading to the alternator shop in a little bit here to get it tested, but I'm suspecting a wiring issue and not an alternator issue. Will dive into that dummy light circuit when I get back.

New regulator is dead in the same way as the old, have another one on the way that should be here tomorrow. No idea the cause yet though, shop still has the alternator.

Is your battery holding a charge?

Well, the previous battery got fried before I noticed the problem. Replaced it the same time as the regulator, and current battery is doing fine.

Not sure what really happened on this one, but all is well now with ANOTHER replacement regulator.

Wierd that I had both the original go bad, plus the replacement, with the same unusual problem. Had a local alternator shop install it this time and do a run-in to seat the brushes. Seems fine now, voltage is holding right where it should be.

Also found out that a good alternator shop can get the regulator for the Marelli's with no problem at all. IIRC the part number is IX128 or IX127 (Same regulator, one has a longer stud for the tach output). Ran me $50 for the part, install and diagnostic work.
