Alternator Queations

So my alternator took a crap on Saturday evening. Signs had been coming that it was going: tach wouldn't register until 2k RPM's, then when on the highway had intermittent jolt and loss of power. Pulled over, no start, switched to battery two to limp home, 3 miles later total loss of power again. Tom towed me to the garage. Thanks Tom!

I pulled the alternator yesterday in preparation to buy a new one and rebuild my old one for a spare for me or others when/if the time comes. I just called Alternator Starter Corp to see if they could rebuild mine and they said the parts are no longer available. They're out of Carlstadt and do a lot of tractor trailer work.

www.asralternators.com

He said only the rectifier and regulator are available anymore for mine.

Current specs:
-Magneti Marelli part no. YLE 10099
-I believe it is 85 amps but I would like 100. Looking at the YLE 10100 as a replacement.
-pic attached.

Questions:
-I forgot to take note of the pulley number but I'm assuming I should replace that simultaneously. Any have it off the top o their head?
-Has anyone rebuilt this type of alternator recently? He said he could not get the parts.
-What did it cost to rebuild?
-There are at least 10 dealers of these on eBay for around $130-140 shipped. Anyone bought one from an eBayer lately and have issues or recommendations? The guy said to watch out for rebuilders stating they're new, and especially aftermarket items.
-I need one before the weekend. Anyone have a new one for under $150?
-Why is RN selling them for $1,000????? Holy crap.

This is what I'm probably going to buy today. It is the only one that I could find that states both new and not aftermarket:

1 year warranty. Not bad. The only better one would be a lifetime one from a Napa or Autozone...

I don't think that ebay alternator is a genuine Magnetti Marelli. Pretty sure it is a cheap off brand. I was hard pressed to find a source for a Genuine alternator for less than 600. This is why I upgraded to the 120amp above. I got the same story about parts from rebuilders too.

Yeah I e-mailed the seller earlier to confirm if it is a Magneti, but I'm assuming it is a no. The one on your site is sexy, James, are there any d-90 discounts?

Are the parts for the 120 amp one more readily available? If the casing is the same size/dimensions and the parts for MAN7464 are more readily available, then they could potentially just rebuild with my current one, right?

Thanks James I really appreciate it and will let you know. The alternator guy asked me to run it up to his place and he'll see if it's something as simple as a bad regulator.

That would be a good question for your alternator rebuild guy. I'm sure the windings are different in the 120 amp but not sure about the other parts and how they mount. In theory it would work if the case is the same on the back. You would also need the new cover for the back as the updated 120 amp regulator and Diode are slightly larger.

Man I wish I would have seen those! At $1210 I'd get 2 just to have one for a spare.

I may be a bit late here, but TNTLR has the YLE10100 for $189 - says they're 100 AMP, however, always thought these were 120

if you buy one that is shipped (say, from ebay) and its under warranty...and it goes bad...you should check to see whether you are the one paying shipping to return the bad one, and then again to get another "good" one. that isnt going to be cheap if you have to pay. might wanna go local auto store or reputable who will take care of you (tillery).

I replaced mine a few months back with a unit from Will Tillery...had some problems that were most likely induced by me but the unit was replaced at no charge with no questions and I had it in hand in a few days. Highly recommend the units he sells and the guys he deals with

no, the units from Will are new (rebuilt). he actually has a 3rd party that builds them in Utah and they will be shipped directly from there.
