Alternator noise?

When running the alternator makes a loud whine/whirring sound. It's a Bosch that's relatively new, but sat for about three years while redoing the rest of the D90. It charges fine and everything, just loud. Has anybody else encountered this?

My bad ones sounded like a grinder or popcorn maker...keep an eye on the tach gauge when it starts to move erratic then it's going bad. I'm on my third alternator and this one's a Boch, so far I've made it a couple years but now I keep one in inventory. Good Luck!

Is it from the belt or actual belt making the noise?

I'm pretty sure that the noise is coming from the alternator. I guess i could try loosening the tension on the belt and see if that helps. I will keep an eye on the tach. The noise is more annoying then anything, as we all know, it's already a loud vehicle. I'll just tell people that it has twin turbo or something.

Take the belt off, spin alternator pulley by hand, if it's loose, noisy or spinning too easily your bearings are shot.
You can swap them.

Spray some WD40 on the front & rear bearing...if the noise goes away, you've got your culprit.
