Alternative diesel compatibility

I now have a 2.8 in my Defender. I am also in the military, where JP8 has replaced diesel as the common source of fuel for all diesel engines. My assumption is that I can use JP8 as a substitute for diesel, but I'm afraid to assume with my brand new, non-mil spec expensive 2.8. Can anyone chime in? No guidance in the electronic manuals from international on this?

Jet fuel is thinner than normal diesel as I understand it. I know that the military have an up graded pump for the GM diesels that has some hardened parts to deal with it. You might be ok with a newer engine but I'd use some sort of additive to add some lube to the fuel.

My understanding is its not the "lube" quaility but the aromatic instead. I'll send you a link Mark.

JP

I think the age, type of the seals in the injection pump will be okay. Everthing should be "nitride" quaility in that version of the Bosch VE pump.

So when my maintenance sergeant offers me a 6 gallon can of JP8, should I say 'No" or "yes"?

It depends on whether or not you want to get investigated!

Possible, but unlikely. The motorpool security have no life, and watch them like hawks.

Good luck getting it far anyway - you'll probably break a final drive, snap a torsion bar, or run out of JP8 before you get it home.

the first 2 unlikely, but the 3rd is a certainty.

I can try. Hitch up a tanker to it and I'm set for what a mile maybe?
