Alloy wheels - what exactly are they made of?

Just curious.

And is the surface color just a coating? It looks like it to me on this rim for example. Where they have rubbed they go a dull light grey color - almost looks like plastic.

And yes that would be air you see bubbling out of the bead - I hate mud!

On second thoughts maybe the light grey is a primer?

Most alloy wheels are painted, these included. The grey is the usual primer color for the silver wheel topcoat.

Yeah I seem to learn the hard way. I ad torn mine up bad enough to just keep tearing them up instead of switching to steelies. It would have been nice if I had realized this before doing any damage to them at all.
