When I turn on the AC, I have developed a real loud screeching sound under the vehicle (almost like the fan or a belt is rubbing against something). Only happens when the AC is on, and not every time (about 8 out of 10 times when I turn it on). Data point: sound remains constant even if I increase or decrease speed of the fan. Anyone ever had this issue? Really loud - can't be good. 1995 D90.

Sorry - moderators, can this be moved to "Defender" section? Thanks

Sometimes the belts stretch and slip on the pulley. It's not noticeable, it will still turn but it will make a squealing sound. You should be able to adjust the tensioner or replace the belt to resolve the issue.

screeching could be the belt isn't tight enough or the compressor is failing and is harder for the engine to drive causing belt slip ... mine experienced the second and AC still worked fine ... it did raise the temp on the engine as it had to work harder ...

Soapy water / KY jelly, etc. is is basically a must. Yes, good idea to remove trim panels - only takes 5 more minutes to do so.

If the AC works, then my experience has been that the issue is poor belt tension (or the AC compressor is loose)
