Doug....do you not have a shop manual for these things yet?

It's really easy to do (the rule of 9....when #1 valve is loose adjust valve #8...the total will always add up to 9) but the manual will describe it better than I ever will.

I like to do it when the motor is dead cold like before it has been run at all that day.

I also change the oil every 3k and adjust the valves every 3rd (9k) for motors with les than 60k total and every 12k for older motors as they seem to need less adjustment. Mine didn't need anything last time I checked. I use the shorter service intervals as my heap leads a fairly hard life.

Matt,
I haven't. Stupidly have the -89 book and haven't bought the 90 on yet. I have been cheating and getting what ever info I need from the net. I have only put about 2k on this engine so far but want to address everything early on. The engine is purported to have just around 110k. It looks very simple as compared to working on BMW M cars where one "shims" the valve clearance. So cold @ .20mm it tis.
Thanks

Doug
I can fax the pages from work tomorrow if that helps. My truck is in getting a ton of stuff done as I type this and the valves adjusted is one of those things. The other is stripping the front of the engine to the block and removing the oil pan to inspect the lower end.

When you do the valve adjustment that I should do since I have 10k on the motor now, do you need a new cover gasket?

They are rubber so it should survive but they are cheap enough to have on hand.

Yup just replaced: starter, cam belt, water pump, radiator, and went full width with a new intercooler.
Gave Rooster Ron Peppard a ride around the Capital beltway in her last night a 75mph.
Glow plugs seem to be toast- she grudgingly started this morning in 16 degree weather.

75mph? Sounds like your tires are too small.

LOL- thats highway cruise with 285.75.16's per the garmin. I have pushed up to the mid 80's but that gets sketchy with a couple hundred pounds on the roof rack.

Hawaii. Big surf. Just got back. Had to shovel the slut out to leave.....and shovel it out to get home. Things might have been better if I'd put the glow plug relay back in........."grudgingly started"
