Adjusting Backlash on RRC end drive...

Any tips on how to adjust backlash? I just replaced the swivel grease, can i remove the entire ball housing assembly in order to remove the axels? what is acceptable pinion to ring gerar play?

Thank you;

-Gabe.

Yes.

4 to 7 thou is the R&P backlash setting.

Might be best to download a workshop manual.

I have a manual, but im wondering what could cause the backlash to be off so much. the is like 1" of play at the pinion before the wheels are engaged.

Play at the pinion flange is not just backlash in the pinion/ring gear. It is a combination of backlash from all of the components. 1" sound normal.

I was looking at videos where it looks pretty tight, and i feel a vibration around 35 MPH and goes away until i reach 65MPH then it vibrates if i let off the gas. It gets worse as i feather the gas...

Mine has way more play than this (end of the video)

Most likely a u-joint.

That video is just showing pinion/ring gear backlash. In the truck you see the combination of pinion, diff spider gears, 4 splined joints and the two CVs. It adds up and 1" at the outside the pinion is within a range of normallity.

there is no play spec per se between the pinion flange and ring gear. there is a backlash spec but what that translates to at the pinion flange is unknown.

there is a preload spec on the bearings.
