On my 97 D90 with 107k miles, I now have a ticking sound, noticeable from inside the cab and appears to come from the passenger side of the motor.
It comes on soon after a start and continues, independent of engine speed. You can listen to it here:
recorded off the passenger side, hood closed.
The rate is very fast for any single item source so started looking elsewhere. Had the belt removed and it went away. The source appears to be the AC compressor. There is a bit of play on the pulley, Compared it to another 97 with absolutely no play.
Anyone else ever with this problem?
Can the compressor be repaired (clutch swap) or is a replacement in order? I just started looking for replacements and $255 seems pretty good for a reman job. Looking into a NAPA equivalent with a lifetime warranty.
