97 Now hesitates when trying to start

My truck is hesitating when I turn the key. Its always had a strong quick start. But twice in the past six months I got a high pitched spinning sound when I tried to start. I thought it was the starter going so I picked one up. Just recently my cats blew up taking out my muffler so I had it in an independent land rover shop and ended up taking care of all the following:

Replace Y-pipe, cats, muffler and O2's
Reset the Service Engine Light (just passed 88K)
Replaced fuel sender (fuel gauge hasn't worked in years)
Repalced fuel filter
Repalced Alt (mechanic said it looked to be on its last leg)
Replaced serp belt

Does any of this above lead you guys in any particular direction as I begin to trouble shoot this issue?

Did you replace the starter or just buy it....

Spinning starter means one thing...no tooth engagement between starter gear and ring gear. This could be caused by; faulty starter drive, broken or worn teeth on gears, mismatched starter/ring gear. Probably can rule out that last one. That leaves you with those other unpleasant possibilities.
Be sure that your electric connections are clean, tight. Double check your engine ground connection.

Replacing a starter on a rover v8 is bad business, so try the connections first.

Could be the starter solenoid, but I'd have the battery tested (auto parts places can do this) and check your wiring and grounds first.

Thanks guys.

New starter is in so I better double check my connections and battery strength. Wish I hadn't jumped to such an expensive conclusion with the starter. The high-pitched whine was nothing like I'd ever experienced with a low battery though. The original starter's teeth are in good shape and the solenoid looks good too.

The old Alt may have done a job on the battery so I'll do soe due diligence in that direction.
