97 NAS SW Rear Door Light Trigger

Hi all,

Happy New Years! Quick question... on the 97 SW... does opening the rear door turn on the interior lights? Sounds stupid as there is a trigger there but mine doesn't turn on any lights. There is no power going to that trigger. Examining the wiring diagram... there is no "rear door" switch. I just wanted to confirm it indeed is supposed to turn on the light before chasing wires.

Thanks.

Yes, it should. Mine does anyway. One thing you could try is sliding the toggle on the overhead dome light. There may be a setting to cutoff the lights turning on when the door is opened.

Correct, opening the door triggers the switch to turn on the dom light, sometimes corrosion can get in there and keep it from engaging I would unscrew it, clean and reinstall it see if that helps. If not the switch is a few bucks new.

The trigger does turn on the rear light only. There is no power going to the door pin. The door pin sends a ground to the dome light when the door is open. The power wire goes directly to the dome light. Most times the door pin goes bad. Take the door pin out, one screw, and ground the wire going to the door pin. If the light turns on you have a bad switch. If not make sure the bulb is good. If the bulb is good then I would take the light out and make sure the light has power.

I understand both interior lights come on if the light switches are set the same. There's also a "brain" that will turn them off if you leave the door open for an extended period of time. BMW made lots of electrical changes to the 1997 vs's earlier model years.

Thanks... yes... the rear dome light works and has power... the front doors turn on that rear light (as well as the front light). Maybe that's not right.

I grounded that wire and still nothing. Any idea where that wire goes? I chased it under the car but looks like it goes into the frame. I have to redo my headliner so wondering if I can just bypass all that and connect directly to the dome light somewhere. Maybe the PO had it changed so that the front doors turn on both lights and the rear does nothing.

Pup, On a 1997 SW, it's proper that BOTH lights go on when any of the 3 doors are open... don't make me say it again !!

The switches provide the ground point for the lights.

Yup, I have all the original electrical guides for the '97. It's a small box behind the center thing that has the wiper control switches on it. Within the "brain" is also the sounder for "you left the lights on dummy" and "your door is ajar, dummy" and that nice little chime that tells you to buckle up before I report you to the cops.

My interior lights work perfect than for the front 2 doors... they dim after 10-15 secs. I've seen that "brain." So I assume that wire from the rear trigger ends up there. I'll take a look tomorrow so see if maybe something is loose. Thanks.
