97 door handle retaining screw

The front of a door handle has pulled away from its screw. Taking off the door panel, I see that there is a screw (A) threading into a piece (B) with threads on the outside which thread into the plastic handle.

My A is rusted into B so this entire assembly has pulled from the handle.

I'd rather not replace the entire handle. Has anyone reattached this assembly? I suspect that the plastic threads in the handle are worn and may need some teflon tape or such. Or, glue the replacement B "permanently" into the handle?
