97 defender NAS charcoal vapor canister

Just wanna put this out there cause I've been looking for this because I busted mine. The fuel vapor canister that is located behind the passenger side headlight is about $500 at Rovers north, but its the exact same part that was on 73 Buick regals. The part number is 17092039, and AutoZone sells it for $51.99. Hope this can save someone some money.

Lol! That may have been stupid... I didn't wanna take it off till I could find a replacement, and I haven't been able to find one so I finally decided that I was gonna epoxy it just to alleviate any vaccuum issues. Low and behold there was a GM and a part number stamped on top so I went to researching... Maybe I was the only one that didn't know? I do now... Lol!

I've been bummed cause I could not stomach paying almost $500 so I am excited as heck and will gladly accept the pointing and snickering.... Hahaha!

I did the same thing with the fuel pump... Found one for $70 feels like I've won something everytime I find a compatible part! Hehe!

Hey! While I've got your attention, would that canister cause trouble starting or is it just strictly emmission crap?

You can also pull one out of a parted out disco, RR quarter. Its a little hard to get to but not if you cut the metal away.

The canister that mounts under the passenger side wing behind the headlight on the defender is different than the canister on the disco I think.. if I'm not mistaken the one on a disco is a box whereas the defender has a cylindrical can...

Either way, I have gotten tons of help and advice on this forum and I am so thankful for all the knowledgeable folks on here... I just want to contribute something back. I may post things that everyone already knows, but if I can help save one person some money on a part it will make me feel better...

There are 2 different types. On the Disco the later ones are known as advanced evap. Change was sometime in 97 I think on the Disco. 97 D90 has the earlier one.

Early is round. Advanced is rectangular.

Still like having a reasonably priced new option though. Thanks for researching that.

Very cool! I was told a while back the the NAS 90 4.0 v8 is the same motor that was used in early buicks, and so far fuel pump and evap can are both gm parts if you look deep enough. I'm thinking almost everything pertaining to that motor will have a gm cross reference.

Its not the 'same' but it is a derivative of it. Some parts will cross, others won't depending on what LR changed over the years.

E3240 is the one I got... They have another one that is about the same price that has larger capacity though for the same price. Keep in mind it is only the pump, not the entire housing. You will have to change it out, which is a cinch once you get the tank out.

Hi all,

I'm still on the hunt for the evap tank that goes in the back passenger wheel well and hooks up to the fuel system. I wonder if there isn't a GM equivalent for that part as well?

That stupid thing is making it impossible to register my truck in California.
