97 D90 Transmission Shifter Tear

What do you think could have caused this tear on the transmission shifter dust cover?

They all do that. They get gummed up and then they rip.

Where is the bushing/ball that pivots with the shifter on the shifter tape?
It looks like it was missing? (that would wreck the tape in a heartbeat) or maybe it already fell into the shifter tape?
However, when they get old they will do that.

Thanks for the info guys...
This is a pic of a D90 that I am considering, so I will have to ask about the shift ball thing. I just wanted to make sure that this wasn't an indicator of a transmission problem.

Not an issue at all. Used those are like $40-50 and new they are $125.

Rovers North sells one made for the Range Rover for $60, but it works for the Defender too. The one they sell for the D90 is ~ $120. To make the one for the RR work on the D90, all that needs to be done is to trim off the bottm of the plastic sleeve screw mounts on the bottom of the unit, a 2 minute job. Buy 2, as the plastic will go bad again. Now, for the next question "How do I get the shft handle off ?"

Pry the textured piece off, then remove the L shaped clip.

I thought that picture looked familiar so I went out to the driveway and, sure enough, that's the shifter on the 90 I just picked up from the seller in Maryland. I am very pleased with the condition. Mechanically, it's great. Little things like the seat tear and transmission tape tear will be resolved tomorrow when the box from RN arrives. Fixed the windscreen today at Safelite (they did a decent job for $80.)

Now I just need to get new sidesteps that are rusted out and find a new clip for the sunroof.

I'm new to Defenders so any help on how to identify parts would be great. Right now I'm just sending photos to RN.

Congratulations on your new D90 purchase! And welcome to the D-90 Source!
That is the D90 I was looking at. Seems like you got a good one. I am in the market for another Defender, but can't decide between another D110 or 97 D90 SW or ST.

Thanks, Jon. I'm having fun as are my kids who love the jump seats. It's annoying me though as in a "normal" car, they could just elbow each other in the back seat and now they sit across from each other and can get in full swings.

I replaced the illumination unit last night and it would have been an easy fix if I had been a bit smarter and checked the forums before trying to take everything apart. I managed to knock out half of my fuses when I put the console back in place.

Now, I just need to replace those side steps and she'll be good.
