95 D-90 5th gear broken

Wondering if someone can help me figure out what just happened to my 5th gear. I have a 5 speed manual transmission. Everything was shifting beautifully until this evening while driving home in 5th gear at about 60-65 mph. I accelerated and just got a rapid engine rev with no gear. I slowed and shifted into 4th. The rest of the way home 1st - 4th gears were fine. I tried 5th once again and it just wasn't there. I have searched high and low but haven't found this problem addressed. Any insights into what happened and where to get any parts I might need would be greatly appreciated. I have a Series III that I work on with no major snags but I just got this D90 recently and I am not so sure. Please help if you can.

Well at least you got home, and other gears are working! I didn't have the same luck - 5th went, so I stayed in fourth, then when I stopped none worked. Needed a new transmission. Someone here with technical expertise will probably be able to help you with official diagnosis ...

Do you have reverse? It is common for the 5th reverse shaft to sheer.

Wow, thanks for the fast replies. This forum is the real deal. I do have reverse. I checked it when I got to the house. 5th makes a lighter steady grinding noise when I ease off the clutch but no grab...if that makes any sense.

Sounds like it could be a linkage issue as I have never heard of just 5th failing. I would pull the tunnel cover and the lever off and see if it is anything obvious. Roadsiderob here is the transmission expert. He would have better advice.
