Exclamation 94 Defender 90 cranks but won't start

My Defender (5 speed manual) ran perfectly and turned it off. Next day, went to start and it just cranks but won't turn over. I changed the fuel filter and when I turn on the ignition key, I hear the fuel pump run for about 5 seconds. I replaced the plug wires due to some corrosion and checked the plugs for spark. Got a redish spark. I checked the ODB at the passenger foot well but it is not displaying any codes, just dark. Only when I turn on the key to the accessory position and ready to crank, the check engine light comes on with a few others and then it goes off after about 5 seconds, lik eits simply doing a light check. I have a diagnostic scanner but I can't see where to hook it up. Is the 94 Defender OBDII? I see that OBDII started in 96. I do have factory A/C. Any ideas?

Does it try to catch at all? Do you smell gas? Did you have a check engine light before the indicdent?

Did you try replacing the silver relays?

It is not OBDII.

Doesn't catch at all, just cranks. I smell faint gas after cranking for a while buit I don't remember seeing the check engine light on at all before this.

Sounds like the exact symptom I had in with my '94. First time it was a bad ignition module- a common failure, especially if it had not been relocated from the distributor.

The second time it would not start (just weeks after replacing the ignition module) it turned-out to be the pickup inside the distributor which I was told, rarely fails. Lucky me.

I wish I could tell you how to troubleshoot this but all I did was giagnose that I had no spark at the plugs and only one initial spark from the coil upon cranking. I left the rest up to my local mechanic.

Hope this provides some help.

Cheers,

CARL

My ignition coil is the standard Bosch unit. Waiting for it to fail next.
