94 Defender 90 cooling problems

I have a NAS 1994 Defender 90 V8 with 164,000 miles. Recently changed my thermostat and fan clutch, but when I get into traffic she overheats according to the gage in the dash. I've filled up the antifreeze and got all the air out but she still gets hot on the gage. What could I be looking at as my problem?

are you losing coolant? if not, then the usual suspects would be thermostat, fan clutch or clogged radiator. I can't think of anything else that would cause you to overheat in stop and go traffic. I would inspect all three of those, even if they were replaced.

If you are losing coolant but don't see it under vehicle, then next up is head gasket. this will cause air in your coolant lines, which reduces coolant efficiency and contact space.

Do the hoses get firm? If the pressure cap is faulty it can reduce efficiency of the system.

I had replaced the pressure cap a couple months ago. I think it's the head gasket, she's been running good for her 19 years, replaced a lot of stuff so far. So the head gasket is next. Thanks guys for your input.

I would bet on the rad being clogged before the head gasket. If the water pump is original I would look very carefully at the weep hole too.

yeah.. dont just go replacing head gaskets. You can test the coolant to see if exhaust gases are getting into the coolant.

flush the system a few times see if you can clean the rad first.

If the water pump is original then the propeller in the pump may have corroded down to numbs. How are your cats? They could be collapsing therefore making your engine hotter.

also good points. 19 years is a lot to ask from a water pump for any brand. If it was mine, I would replace it and the radiator as preventative maintenace at this point even if nothing was wrong.

Well I suspect it's a bad water pump. I had topped her coolant off yesterday and drove for a little. This morning I checked the coolant and she was almost empty. I will order a new water pump and the head gasket set to replace mine. Hope after all this maintenance, this fixes my problems. Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Check your radiator too ... There is a reason the head gasket failed ... Prolonged poor cooling is the likely cause.

since the radiator will be out for doing the engine work, get it to a shop and have them boil it out.

Do not do head gaskets until you have exhausted all other solutions.

You don't want to do them and find out you have another issue.

Ok I have exhausted all possible problems on my 1994 Defender 90. Changed fan clutch, thermostat, brand new radiator because the old now was bad, checked water pump and it looks new, and a new radiator cap. That's everything that's an easy fix and a possible cause for my engine overheating. Now I think it's my head gasket that are bad, so Monday a new chapter in my Landy's story book continue. Think I will let the dealership handle this chapter. I just wonder how much this job is going to cost me? Let me know any thoughts about my problem that I'm facing.

Have you checked the exhaust back pressure? I went through all the usual suspects like you and in the end it was bad cats that led to a slipped sleeve.

Look at the spark plugs nearest the bulkhead and compare them to ones further forward. If they are cleaner or one is cleaner it's a good indicator that head gasket is gone and it's getting steam cleaned.

I went through all this and more. Eventually changed head gaskets and all was good again.

From and independent this is a couple of thousand. From a main dealer probably double ...

If you are getting the head gaskets done, be sure the heads are checked for flatness and skim cut if required. If the heads are warped and not repaired they will continue to leak. It would also be a good idea to do a valve job whie the heads are off and replace all coolant hoses.
