Altititude? LV's at 2000' & this rig was presumably shipped from somewhere else with a different altitude. Could that be something effecting idle?

Move to a Holly carb and things will be much more enjoyable.

I will try that and see if it helps. Im just lost because it started up perfect, little bit of choke for maybe a min. I drove probably 20 miles to 3-4 places. No starting problems or idling problems. Then this morning couldnt get it to idle at all. I said screw it and drove to work 2 miles away anyways. Still wouldnt idle when i got there. choke all the way out, pedal to the floor for a little.

Originally from south africa but was in colorado for 6 months before I got. So i should just have somebody look over it and perhaps adjust it. Anybody in vegas?

Thank you guys for the help, much appreciated!

Hmmm, some of your posts could be taken as your scenario is that you are trying to drive around with it choked or partially choked. Is that what you are saying?

Also, much of the populated part of Colorado would be quite a bit higher than 2000' feet, right?

And didn't the guy that sold the impressive clown painting collection recently move to Vegas to hang a shingle?

I may have driven around the block with the choke partially on, but it was before i learned that was bad. also only once. Probably way above 2000 ft, is there a guide with pictures on how to adjust? I feel like im looking under a car for the first time looking at those carbs.

Not sure who you are talking about on the clown painter! hah

Google Image Search using searchwords "SU carb" has some labeled diagrams of SU carbs similiar but not necessarily identical to the pic that you posted - a few of them show an idle adjustment screw of some sort...might help to make sense of the link that Dro posted...Good luck!

So this all sounds like my engine before carb tuning, plug replacement, timing adjustment, and distributor.

Ran fine sometimes, became less reliable over time. Then it would idle ok but not drive well. Then it would sound ok, and die the first time I came to idle after driving.

I think it just needs a good full tuneup. Do whatever you can do yourself, take it to a shop for the carbs and the rest. Use the next 12 months of well running carbs to learn how to do em, haha

It's been a long time since I have used SU's
But you say it runs fine one minute and not the next, I take you have checked for any air leaks, the diaphragm rubbers are good, and the carbs are clean inside?

Hope the pictures are of use. One thing there no used pumping the throttle as these do not have pumper jets, pumping upsets the idle air bleed.
