'87 110 Stationwagon Roll cage question

Long time lurker on the forums thats getting close to actually pulling the trigger!

I am trying to make sure my wife is happy with the safety aspects of having a little one in the back of a 110. Do the stationwagons have roll cage type structure in the tops or is it more of a bolt on that I should get a rollcage for?

I like the way the external cages look so I am not against getting one but just trying to make sure everything is safe should the unfortunate happen.

I searched the forum but was having a bit of trouble... Thanks for the help!!

Mike

There is no roll protection on an 87 110. It needs to be added via an internal or external cage. Lots of threads regarding this.

Does your 87 still have a roof that has external ribs?

If it is an original 87 roof it should have external ribs.

It does have the ribs. My understanding is that makes the safety devices roll cages not fit.

I'm told the ribs can be dimpled in with a piece of pipe and a SD cage will fit.

Just FYI I had an internal cage fitted to a ROW 110 I owned years ago. I was real pleased. I personally like the natural lines of the 110 so that was my primary reason for going internal but the SD cage follows the roof line very nicely and did not feel cramped inside IMO.

It depends upon the particular cage. Some SD cages fit with the older externally ribbed roofs and others do not. I have an externally ribbed roof with a SD cage, where the A hoop is external and the B, C, & D hoops and bracing are internal ala CT.

Safety Devices 4 point cage is what you are thinking of. It's not a specific D90 cage, it bolts to the roof and to the frame through brackets under the wings, in front of the bulkhead.

The one you linked has no rear support. It seems more for looks. The ones I see on D90's have a rear support.

If you are referring to the NAS 90 cage, it's not manufactured any more.

You could go external / internal

Yeah. That's the one I want.

If I can't have the NAS 90 cage I'd rather go with the full external SD cage.

Rbl1387sss is essentially a NAS 90 hardtop cage and is available. It just doesn't work in a 110 SW.

Sorry, I'm talking soft top cage, not HT that is no longer made, and, as noted the Rbl1387sss won't fit a 110.

Your best option is the RBL148 7SSS - External/internal 'half' roll cage

Mike, while you are making the wife happy, don't forget to get rock sliders for side impact protection.
