'85 d90 2.5NA starter brace

Do the 2.5NA diesels have a bracing bracket on the front end of the starter attached to the engine block or were they used on later TD or Tdi's? The d90 Green Bible, which covers the 2.5NA, TD and Tdi, shows and discusses a bracket but my truck has an original looking ground strap running from the forward bolt on the starter to the block where the bracket would be.

I am replacing my reluctant starter and will add the bracket if I should, seems to be a good idea on a diesel.

I've never seen one. Where is this in the manual?

It is in the 90/110 Workshop Manual, the Brooklands one, in the starter motor remove/replace and o/h section.

You sure your not looking at the earth cable between the starter and the block?

But no brace that I have ever seen on NA's Td's or Tdi's

There is a heat shield fitted to Tdi's

No I have the earth cable where the WSM indicates there should be a secondary brace. May be for later engines since a few folks w/ NA's chimed in on another forum that they do not have them.

Apparently the bracket is relatively large $ also....I may not worry that much about it and consider it if I stumble across one at some point.

Who makes or sells a gear reduction starter for the 2.5NA? I saw one at mean green, but it said it was only good up to 1980. And British Starters only lists for petrol engines on their site.

Not sure the need. The stock starter works fine. I used to dead start mine at -40. Never had a problem with a starter.

I believe the OE Paris-Rhone/Valeo starters are geared, available....and pricey. Pretty sure some of the aftermarket ones are also, at least some of the ones I've seen advertised look like a more modern type geared starter.
