4.6 vs. 4.6 HSE- what is the difference?

If anyone can shed some light on the differences I would appreciate it. Just not sure what HSE stands for.

Looking to upgrade to a 4.6 and am considering some options.

Also, if I were to rebuild a short block would you just put new rings and main bearings in or all bearings including cam bearings?

Thanks for the help!

The HSE is the trim package for the truck... The 4.6's is either a GEMS or a Bosch, depending on year. The GEMS motors should be a direct drop in, into your truck, I think they ran from 95 - 00.

HSE = High Spec Equipment or some such. As woldd90 indicated, it's just a trim package, and you can find more information on the various years with this handy site.

All bearings as well as rings. For a 4.6 you will need to keep your front cover. You also have to modify the pulleys as the 4.6 crank sticks out more. Otherwise more or less straight swap part for part. Use newer composite head gaskets and forego the outer head bolts.

OOpsie daisy! I reread your post to see that you have the later 4.0 engine. These 4.0/4.6 are pretty much a straight swap. The difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6 is the stroked crank.
There are other things you can do to these, like installing a high lift cam, putting in Ford or Chevy pistons with different compression ratios, porting the heads, installing headers...aluminumv8.com has some interesting ideas.
Want 400-plus horsepower? Talk to those guys.
