4.6 in a 97

since the 97's have a different injection system i was wondering if this makes it any easier to swap in a 4.6 my d90 is auto. my plan would be to get an engine from a wrecking yard with all the things i need for a swap. thanks

I did a 4.6 into my 97 4.0 Disco. All was the same except the crank postion sensor which was easy to change. Let me know if you have any questions.

What did you do for a chip?

Mike at ECR discussed this a while back.

I considered a super chip, but a local shop who has a test book downlaoded a flash update but that was 6 months after the new engine was installed. didn't notice any difference. Drove the truck with 33s on her until I decided that adding the 5 speed was a bad idea in Orlando traffic.

Yes that is was I did and it ran great. As a matter of fact until last week I have another 4.6 block and was ready to do the same all over. Decided to go diesel instead.

I took the intake parts and front cover from my 97 4.0 GEMS and bolted it directly onto the 4.6 block. The heads and gaskets are the same. The only difference was the bracket that is spot welded into the block near the bell housing plate for the crank position sensor. The two sensors are different and the 4.0 sensor will not bolt into the 4.6 sensor plate. Take a hammer and tap the plate and it will fall out of either black. Apply some JB weld to the 4.0 sensor housing and seat it into the 4.6 block.

Keep in mind the following

the Cam position sensor is located on the front cover so you keep the 4.0 one
the knock sensors are the same in the same position (on the side of the block)
the AC switch, temp sending unit, fuel injection connectors etc are located on the intake manifold and fuel rail, which is retained from the 4.0
water pump etc are retained by reusing the front cover from the 4.0

It was not that big of a deal. I could run 85 mph all day long with 33s (all be it not that safe when passed by a tractor trailer)

I could tow a house, although stopping was a scary

It worked for me with with no other mods, the adjustment to the ECU did not seem to make that big of a deal.

I did a 5 speed conversion at the same time, so I can't say how the transmission would hold up.

I get short block 4.6 for 3700. A guy on e-bay sells 4.6's outright (allegedly new) with heads for around 4k.

I don't recall ever seeing a definitive answer (or even an answer by general consensus here) on the chip question for 4.6 conversions on 97 GEMS Defenders.

Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't ECR Mike (or someone else in the know) say that the issue was not so much that the 4.6 in a '97 wouldn't run with the 4.0 chip, but rather that the 4.6 wouldn't perform to its full potential? (To the guys with 4.6 97's, would you say fact or fiction on this?)

I also seem to remember reading somewhere, (maybe on the ECR website?) that there were two concerns with the 4.6 chip for GEMS 97's. One was, (or is ) solved, but the second one was not and Mike was working thru UK chip guy Mark Adams for resolution???

I too really like the idea of putting a 4.6 in my '97, but the enthusiasm has always been dulled a bit because of the unanswered GEMS chip question...

There aren't that many around. They stopped making them.....for now. I heard the new batch of heads and blocks from the company that bought the tooling came out for shit. I know I can get two more shorts, for now. The other guy selling for 4k probably charges an arm and leg for shipping.

For me it was better to buy a used bock and send it out for machining. The cost was about $500.00 for the short block, 300.00 or so at the machine shop (if needed) and another few hunrded for bearings etc.

I think that Will in VA generally has complete engines around from Discos and he has a great reputation for doing the right thing. 434-251-9331.

I have a stripped block, crank, psitons, and connecting rods for sale $500.00 plus shipping

I did not use heads designiated for the 4.6, I used the heads from the 4.0, (I think they are the same anyway) and a up graded cam from that place in MI (the link is in this thread some place).

With a used short block I would:
1. Send it out and let a machine shop make the call on crank and connecting rod bearing
2. Leave the cam bearings alone unless damage is found
3. Order the con and main bearings according to the machine shop cut on the crank
4. New rings (8 sets)
5. New timing chain as they are cheap
6. new rear and front main seal
7. Send in the heads are the same time and let the machine shop redo them appx 300.00

Hope this helps
