4.6 Complete GEMS swap into 97 D90

I have the chance to pick up the pictured 4.6 V8 imported to the UAE from Japan. The engine has a reported 45,000 miles on the clock and will cost less that 800 US. (including everything pictured) If I buy it i will be able to do a compression check and pull the pan and a main / rod cap to have a look.

Has anyone done this swap in a 97 NAS D90. I know the engine will bolt up to my ZF no problem but what else should I look for? will the included 4.6 GEMS computer just plug into my harness and everything should work? I need the OBDII to work when finished.

Any advice or ideas are appreciated before i pull the trigger......

William-
You likely don't even need to switch ECU's; I've gone from a 4.0 GEMS to a 4.6 GEMS (in a 98 Disco) and the original ECU worked fine.

Aside from what you mention, while the 4.6 is out, may be worth doing the timing, water pump, and all new hoses as you swap-going with the thought that while it's out it's good to refresh everything.

Good luck! The 4.6 is a great motor when done right, and likely the size these trucks should have had all along.

I believe MOST gems computers have a fuel map for 4.0 and 4.6, and you can just switch it if you have access to the appropriate computer.

Check the fuel rail and front cover.

On my truck it was used the one out of the Disco I and not the one on the Rangie.

Use the ECU out of your D90. The Ragies ECU have something different. Carlos explained it to me 3 years ago and now I don't remember what it was. (I'm getting old). . It was something with the alarm.

You need AutoLogic or similar to do this. I've done it on all my DI's.

Some folks debate that doesn't work. There are a few threads about it.
