4.0 to distributor conversion possible?

I haven't torn into anything yet so I'm posing the question. Can I convert a disco 4.0 to a distributor version for stuffing into a RRC using a combination of parts from the 4.0 and a 3.5 or 4.2?

Yes you can.. Requires different front timing cover, oil pump pickup location etc.. Or you could just use the 4.2.. Heads are all the same.. Earlier heads had an extra set of bolt holes on the outermost side.. But you can just leave them out if using the old heads new block combo..

I've got all the 4.2 bits but the long block was shot. So the distributor drive gear is still in the 4.0?

No, you need the cam out of the 4.2 or a new one.

He likely has a shot 3.9 and has a good 4.0. I have a Bosch 4.6 in my D90 FWIW. As previously stated, you need the correct cam with a distributer drive, and also a spacer for the front crank pulley.
