3rd Brake Light in CO

Curious to know if anyone in CO is driving their ST without a third brake light. The replacement bar looks good but I was hoping to not deal with the cost and work associated replacing it. I've also been contemplating the drop tailgate option.

No safety inspections in Colorado so I doubt you will get a ticket / fix it ticket. The police typically do not know the rules and what each car came with so I doubt they will bother you.

I suppose it could be an issue if you were hit from behind and they found out that you had removed factory safety equipment. Insurance company trying to get out of paying

I have removed them from other vehicles, to fit larger spare tires and I have never been questioned. I have been thinking of going with a surface mount LED on the top side of the rear window on my hard top. I never heard of any law that requires a 3rd brake light I think its a voluntary saftey device in Colorado, but I may be wrong.

It's a Federal law - Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108

It's in here. http://fmvss108.tripod.com/fmvss108text.htm

Been driving mine for 3 years, daily, no problems. However, I am finally in the process of installing one.

This is the lamp assembly I use on my SW to replace the hideous LR 3rd brake lamp on the SW.

I mounted it, centered in the white area area, where the rear squirter was (I moved it to the left) above the door. It's been operational since 2002 and all the LED's still operate.
