300tdi weak acceleration on hills

the never ending timing belt change issues. Ever since changing the timing belt my truck loses power going up hills. driving in the north GA mountains this weekend and on many climbs where speeds were low it would not even pull in third. On one steep dirt road I had to put it in low because in second high range it kept losing power until I had to shift to first! also getting a high pitched whine under load. comes in at about 1800-2000 RPMS. I feel it must be related, but don't know where to start.

I had a high pitched whine like that in my old petrol land rover. Turned out to be the passenger.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I think Doug is on the right track. Check all the pipework to and from the intercooler for loose clamps or holes where the hoses have worn through.

I will check the intercooler connections etc. Also the mechanic that finally fixed my timing issue thinks it could be the vacuum hose from the brake booster to the vacuum pump. He has not investigated. sound plausible?
